Wednesday May 13th – Giro d’Italia 2026 stage 5: Praia a Mare → Potenza (203 km)
The Giro continues north along the Tyrrhenian coast before turning inland toward Potenza. At 203 kilometres, this is one of the longer stages of the first week, and the repeated climbing makes it a demanding day. The route never settles into a steady rhythm. The terrain rises and falls throughout, with several medium‑length ascents.
The opening section from Praia a Mare is relatively calm, following the coastline before the road begins to move inland. The first climb of the day arrives early, a steady ascent that sets the tone for what follows. None of the climbs are steep on their own, but the accumulation of elevation creates a stage that rewards riders who handle changes in pace well. The middle part of the route continues through the hills of Basilicata, where the road rarely stays flat for more than a few minutes.
The most significant climbing comes in the final third. The ascent toward Laurenzana is the longest of the day, a drawn‑out effort that stretches the peloton and may encourage attacks. After the summit the road continues to rise and fall before the descent toward Potenza begins. The approach to the city is irregular, with short ramps that can disrupt the chase. The final kilometre climbs at a moderate gradient, making the finish suitable for strong sprinters.
The distance and the constant climbing make a controlled race difficult. Teams with fast finishers may try to keep the pace steady, but the terrain offers many points where a committed move can gain ground. A reduced group is a likely outcome, especially if the tempo increases on the Laurenzana climb. The uphill finish in Potenza adds another challenge.
Stage 5 is the kind of day that shapes the first week without producing large gaps. It will reveal which riders are comfortable on longer, irregular stages and which teams are prepared to manage a demanding profile. The finish in Potenza should reward those who still have enough strength to sprint on the final rise.
