Tuesday August 26th 2025: stage 4 - Susa > Voiron (206.7 km, sprint+)
The fourth stage of the 2025 Vuelta a España, on Tuesday, August 26th, will take the peloton from Susa, Italy, to Voiron, France, covering a distance of 206.7 kilometers. This stage is one of the hillier stages of the race, with a demanding start through the Alps and a relatively flat finale, offering opportunities for a variety of riders.
The race begins with climbing. The first major obstacle is the Puerto de Exilles, a category three climb (approximately 5.8 kilometers at around 6.2%). This is quickly followed by the Col de Montgenèvre, a category two climb, 9 kilometers long with an average gradient of 5.5 to 6.1%, with sections exceeding ten percent. Next, on French soil, the Col du Lautaret, also category two, awaits, with 9.2 kilometers of climbing at an average of 5%. Its summit is at almost 2,100 meters, providing significant elevation gain in the first part of the race.
After the Lautaret, a long descent towards the Isère valley follows, after which the course flattens out. The remaining 120 kilometers are largely undulating to flat, although the final kilometers climb slightly with gradients around 2 to 3%. This offers opportunities for both strong sprinters and adventurous attackers, depending on how the peloton approaches the day.
Technically, the finale is manageable, but the grueling approach through the Alps could result in a smaller peloton than usual on a flatter finish. Possible scenarios include a sprint from a reduced peloton or success for an early breakaway. The weather, the peloton's form, and the control of the sprint teams could ultimately be decisive.
