Monday August 25th 2025: stage 3 - San Maurizio Canavese > Ceres (134.6km, hilltop)
The third stage of the 2025 Vuelta a España will take the peloton from San Maurizio Canavese to Ceres on Monday, August 25, covering a distance of 134.6 kilometers. The route is located entirely in northwestern Italy, in the shadow of the Graian Alps. The starting point, a small town with historic cycling roots, provides the setting for a typical transition stage that rarely results in a bunch sprint.
The start of this stage is relatively straightforward: the first sixty kilometers are almost flat, ideal for forming an early breakaway. The riders will then encounter the Puerto Issaglio, a category two climb (approximately 5.5 to 6.4 kilometers at an average gradient of 6-6.5%), which climbs to an altitude of 849 meters. It's an ideal springboard for attackers, but the final stage is just as interesting. After the descent, there are several short uphill sections, including climbs at Prascorsano (2.6 km at 5.3%), Corio (1.8 km at 5.7%), and a hilly course with few rest periods.
The final leg towards Ceres features a long, false flat. In the final two kilometers, the road climbs significantly, with an average gradient of around 4% and even a challenging 7% section just before the finish. This makes it difficult for sprinters, while attackers and explosive climbers can seize their opportunity. Possible scenarios are that a strong breakaway group holds its own, or that the final culminates in a sprint by a select group.
Technically, the final features a gentle bend 700 meters from the finish, followed by a sharp hairpin 300 meters from the finish, making positioning crucial. Riders can therefore expect a thrilling battle, in which both tactical and explosive performance will be paramount.
