Friday September 5th 2025: Stage 13 - Cabézon de la Sal > l'Angliru (202km, mountaintop finish)
The thirteenth stage of the 2025 Vuelta a España, on Friday, September 5th, is one of the longest and toughest stages of this year, at 202 kilometers. From the starting point in Cabézon de la Sal, the peloton heads through Cantabria towards Asturias, initially on flat and gently rolling roads.
After a long approach, the hard work doesn't begin until about 150 kilometers. First comes the Alto de Mozqueta (6.6 km at 8.4%), a challenging climb that will split the peloton. Shortly after, the Alto de Cordal arrives, an ultra-steep 5.4 km climb with an average gradient of 9.3%, featuring many uneven sections. Both climbs serve primarily as a foretaste of what truly awaits: the legendary Alto de l’Angliru.
The final climb to the Angliru is 12.4 kilometers long and has an average gradient of 10%, with peaks of up to 23.5% on the dreaded "goat trail" Cueña les Cabres, just before the finish line. The climb has several facets: the first section is already difficult (averaging 8%), followed by a relatively calmer section, but in the second half, the gradient increases sharply with very steep kilometers.
Possible scenarios include a long breakaway that lasts well into the finale, but on the Angliru, the GC riders will generally take control. Due to the extreme nature of the climb, there is a high risk of large time gaps, and one bad day can ultimately cost GC ambitions. This stage is considered a true queen stage that pushes riders to their limits.
