Thursday September 4 2025: Stage 12 - Laredo > Los Corrales de Buelna (145km, break/ hilly)
The twelfth stage of the 2025 Vuelta a España takes place on Thursday, September 4th, and will take the peloton over 144.9 kilometers from Laredo to Los Corrales de Buelna. It's a typical transition stage through northern Spain, with a limited number of kilometers but almost 3,000 meters of elevation gain. Two key climbs are included along the way: the Puerto/Alto de Alisas (8.3 km at an average gradient of 6%) early in the stage and the Collada de Brenes (6.6 km at an average gradient of 8.3%) just over twenty kilometers from the finish.
The stage opens with several rolling kilometers towards the first category 2 climb. This is followed by a long, undulating section where attackers can try to break away, before the riders prepare for the day's highlight: the Collada de Brenes. This Category 1 climb features not only a challenging average gradient but also sections with double-digit gradients. After the summit, a fast, technical descent of approximately twenty kilometers leads to the finish in Los Corrales de Buelna.
Potential scenarios include a battle between strong breakaway riders and punchy climbers. There's a chance an early breakaway will hold out until the finish, but a sprint from a reduced group is also a possibility, especially if the favorites attack directly on the final climb. The short distance and steep finish make this stage an ideal day for riders eager after the tough Pyrenees stages.
