Thursday July 17th 2025: Stage 12 - Auch – Hautacam (180.6 km, mountain top-finish)
The twelfth stage marks the start of the tough Pyrenees block and takes the peloton from Auch to the legendary climb of Hautacam. The course starts relatively calmly, with rolling roads through the south-west of France. The first 90 kilometres are mainly a prelude, in which escapees can seize their chance and the peloton prepares for the tough finale. The first categorised climb is the Côte de Labatmale (1.3 km at 6.3%), a warm-up that mainly serves to test the legs.
After this first hurdle follows a long approach to the Col du Soulor, a climb of the first category: 11.8 kilometres at 7.3%. This climb is a classic in the Tour and will seriously thin out the peloton. Then follows a short descent and the Col des Bordères (3.1 km at 7.7%), a tough climb of the second category that will force the climbers to the front. After the descent towards Argelès-Gazost, the finale begins: the final climb to Hautacam. This climb is 13.6 kilometres long with an average gradient of 7.8% and is known for its capricious character and steep sections.
The scenario of the day will depend on the course of the race. Escapees with climber legs have a chance if they have a sufficient lead at the foot of Hautacam, but the favourites for the classification will not leave much room here. The last kilometres are tough and offer an ideal setting for attacks. Anyone who loses time here will have a hard time in the rest of the Tour. The arrival at Hautacam is always spectacular and will shake up the classification considerably.
