Sunday May 10th – Giro d’Italia 2026 stage 3: Plovdiv → Sofia (175 km)
The final Bulgarian stage takes the Giro from Plovdiv to the capital Sofia. It is a longer day than it first appears, shaped by a steady climb in the middle of the route and a long run toward the finish. The terrain invites a controlled race, but the single major ascent could still unsettle the rhythm before the peloton reaches the wide avenues of Sofia.
The opening kilometres out of Plovdiv are gentle. The road rises only slightly as the race moves west through open countryside. Nothing in the first hour should trouble the sprinters, and the bunch will likely remain compact until the approach to Raduil. From there, the road begins to tilt upward toward the Borovets Pass, the only significant climb of the day. It is a steady ascent of just under nine kilometres at moderate gradients, surrounded by forest. The climb is long enough to stretch the peloton but not steep enough to create real separation unless the pace is unusually high.
Once over the top, the character of the stage changes completely. With more than seventy kilometres remaining, the road drops almost continuously toward Sofia. The descent is not technical, and the wide roads make it easy for teams to organise themselves. Any riders distanced on the climb will have time to return, though the speed in the valley may make that chase demanding. The approach to the city is straightforward, with flowing sections that favour teams willing to take responsibility for the run‑in.
The final eight kilometres are almost entirely straight and slightly downhill. The gradient levels out only in the last kilometre, creating a finish suited to pure speed. The roads are broad, and the lack of corners reduces the chance of late surprises. If the race has stayed together after the Borovets Pass, the sprint trains will have every opportunity to impose order.
A breakaway may try its luck, but the structure of the stage makes it difficult for such a move to succeed. The long descent and the predictable finale give the sprinters’ teams a clear advantage. Unless the climb is raced far harder than expected, Sofia should deliver another fast finish, closing the Bulgarian opening weekend with a decisive sprint.
