Sunday September 7 2025: Stage 15 - Vegadeo > Monforte de Lemos (168km, sprint/ break)
The fifteenth stage of the 2025 Vuelta a España, on Sunday, September 7th, will take the peloton over 167.8 kilometers from Vegadeo to Monforte de Lemos in Galicia. Despite the hilly nature, most of the 3,287 meters of elevation gain are in the first sixty kilometers, increasing the chances for attackers looking to breakaway early in the stage.
Immediately after the start, the Puerto A Garganta awaits, a 16.5-kilometer climb at approximately 4.9%, which will immediately put the pure sprinters at a disadvantage. After a short descent, an undulating course follows, with the Alto de Barbeitos as the second categorized climb. The remainder of the stage remains uneven, with a few smaller climbs, including a final hill about thirty kilometers from the finish—an ideal springboard for late attacks or a solo attack from the leading group.
It's expected that, as with previous finishes in Monforte de Lemos, strong breakaways will have a realistic chance to battle for victory. The sprint teams will try to maintain control, but the challenging start and undulating finish could thin out the peloton enough to prevent a bunch sprint. If a sprint does occur, it will likely be with a thinned-out peloton.
The challenging start and treacherous finish make this stage ideal for punchers and strong attackers. The scenario of a winning breakaway is therefore highly realistic. Given the small amount of opportunities sprinters might want to take their chance.
