Tuesday July 22nd 2025: Stage 16 - Montpellier – Mont Ventoux (171.5 km, mountain top-finish)
After the second rest day, the peloton will face one of the most iconic climbs in cycling: Mont Ventoux. The sixteenth stage starts in Montpellier and takes you via a relatively easy approach to the foot of the barren giant of Provence. The first 120 kilometres are flat to slightly rolling, allowing an early breakaway to gain some distance. The wind can play a major role on the open plains towards Ventoux, which makes the peloton extra vigilant.
The final climb to the top of Mont Ventoux is 21.5 kilometres long with an average gradient of 7.5%. The climb is known for its barren, moon-like landscape and the often merciless mistral wind. The first part of the climb is still sheltered, but after Chalet Reynard the landscape becomes open and unforgiving. The differences can quickly increase here, especially if the pace is increased early.
The scenario of the day depends on the course of the race: attackers can try to win the stage in the early breakaway, but the GC riders will do everything they can to gain time or limit losses. Many legends have been born and broken on the slopes of the Ventoux; this edition will be no exception. The arrival at the top is heroic and will shake up the classification once again. Whoever survives here can dream of Paris.
