Saturday October 11 2025 - Il Lombardia: Como > Bergamo (238km)
Who will win the autumn classic, the final Monument of 2025, Il Lombardia, according to the computer? Will Pogacar aim for a record with his fifth consecutive victory? If he succeeds, he will become the first rider ever to win the same Monument five times in a row. He could also become the first rider ever to finish in the top three of all five Monuments. A historic day seems to be on the horizon for cycling.
The Tour of Lombardy on October 11th is a classic race that features the hilly Northern Italian landscape. Traditionally known as "the race of the falling leaves," it marks the final leg of the classics cycling season. The 2025 route features a succession of long, steep climbs that will continuously challenge the peloton from the halfway point onward. The route of the Tour of Lombardy on October 11, 2025, differs from previous years and now features a route from Como to Bergamo, with a total of over 4,400 meters of elevation gain. The route is characterized by a series of classic and challenging climbs, which together make the race tough and selective.
After the start in Como, the Madonna del Ghisallo quickly follows, known for its historical significance and as the first major test (approximately 8.7 km at an average gradient of 5.3%). The riders then travel through the provinces of Como and Lecco to the province of Bergamo, where the route is renewed with the Roncola (9.4 km at 6.6%) and the relatively mild Berbenno (7 km at 4.8%). Next comes the Passo della Crocetta (11 km at 6.2%), followed by the Zambla Alta (9.5 km at 3.5%), interspersed with several steep sections. The final stage will be decisive: the Passo di Ganda (9.2 km at 7.3%), where the sting is clearly in the tail: the final kilometers feature gradients of over 9%, with peaks of up to 15%. At the summit of the Ganda, there are still over thirty kilometers to the finish, with only a short, steep climb to Colle Aperto (approximately 1 km at almost 8%, partly on cobblestones).
After a classic early breakaway, the peloton will likely ride in a controlled fashion towards the first climbs. Will we see a strong group trying to anticipate an attack from the big favorite? In the middle of the race, the succession of Roncola, Berbenno, Crocetta, and Zambla Alta will create a war of attrition: here, the first contenders will put their teams to work, thinning out the peloton and usually catching the early escapees.
The final stage truly begins at the Passo di Ganda. This is where the favorites can launch their attacks, as the steepness and length create significant differences. After the descent towards Bergamo, the tricky Colle Aperto follows, where an all-or-nothing attack could make the difference. From this group, a technical descent and a short approach to the center of Bergamo follow, where a solo or small group appears to battle it out on the wide asphalt finish line.
This edition is all about consistent elevation gain, long and grueling climbs, and a finale where attackers, climbers, and true endurance riders must seize their chance. This year, therefore, without the short, punchy climbs at Lake Como, but with a tougher, longer route with Bergamo as the backdrop for the finish.
