Vuelta a Espana 2025 - Prediction Points Classification
Thursday 21 August 2025 • Previews
Who will win the points classification in the Vuelta 2025 according to the computer? In other words: who are the favorites for the green jersey?
The points classification in the Vuelta a España is determined by the results a rider achieves at stage finishes and intermediate sprints throughout the race. The points system is designed so that flat stages offer the greatest rewards, favoring sprinters, while hilly and mountain stages provide fewer points. This structure means that consistently finishing highly in flat stages is more valuable than success in the mountains. Time trials give out the least, as there are no intermediate sprints in these stages.
Distribution of points at the finish:
- Flat stages with a classic sprinter’s finish (such as stages 1 and 21):
50 points are awarded to the winner. The breakdown then continues with 30 points for second place, 20 for third, then 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2 points, all the way down to 15th place. These stages are crucial for sprinters, who will aim to consistently place in the top fifteen. - Moderately difficult (hilly) stages (including, for example, stages 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 11, 12, 15, and 19):
The maximum on these stages is 30 points for the stage winner. Runners-up receive 25 points for second, 22 for third, 19 for fourth, with the tally decreasing for subsequent places down to 2 points. - Tough mountain stages (stages 6, 7, 10, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, and 20):
These stages offer a maximum of 20 points for the winner, 17 for second, then 15, 13, 11, and fewer points going down to 1 point for lower-placed riders. This favors breakaway specialists and all-rounders, but yields fewer points than flat finishes. - The team time trial (stage 5):
This stage does not award any points for the points classification, because there are no intermediate sprints or stage-finish points on offer.
Distribution at intermediate sprints:
- In every stage – except for the time trials – riders can also earn points at one intermediate sprint.
The first rider to cross the sprint point earns 20 points, with 17, 15, 13, and 10 going to the next four riders (second through fifth). This can play a decisive role in the competition for the green jersey, especially for riders targeting the sprints on days where a stage win is not realistic.
Additional background:
Because the points system is heavily weighted toward flat stages, pure sprinters are generally the top contenders for the green jersey, especially if they are also competitive in intermediate sprints. However, consistent all-rounders who can place highly in a variety of stages—including hillier profiles—and who actively contest intermediate sprints, can also become candidates for this classification.
